Family-based I-485 processing times by field office (months)
How to read these numbers
USCIS publishes the time within which 80% of cases were completed over the past six months, so half of cases usually finish sooner. Look up the form, category and office on your receipt notice (I-797).
I-130, I-751, work permits and similar forms are decided at service centers with one national time. I-485s filed inside the U.S. are interviewed and decided by the field office for your address, and offices vary a lot; see the chart by office below.
Work permits (C9) and advance parole are usually filed with the I-485. Leaving the U.S. while an I-485 is pending without advance parole generally abandons the I-485 (people in valid H-1B or L-1 status can return on their visa instead).
Once your case passes the posted time and its case inquiry date, you can submit an inquiry on the USCIS website; see how to check your case status.
Common questions
Why is my case slower than the table?
The table covers 80% of cases, so 20% take longer, and service centers move cases around, so cases filed the same month can move very differently. Past the posted time you can submit an inquiry, and with a good reason you can request an expedite.
My I-751 is taking years. What if my green card expires?
The I-751 receipt notice extends your conditional green card by 48 months. Carry it with the expired card for work and travel.
Will my I-485 have an interview?
Most family-based cases, especially marriage cases, are interviewed; some employment-based cases are waived. See the marriage green card guide to prepare.
Can I travel while my I-90 is pending?
The I-90 receipt notice can extend your green card; use it with the expired card. Check that the receipt is still valid before you travel, and if your card was lost, you may need a separate document to return.

Real experiences
I-485: field offices vary widely, and party or Youth League history comes up often
- After transfer to a field office, some see no movement for 9+ months while others are approved in 11 to 12 months, a few without an interview.
- A common sticking point for Chinese applicants is past Communist Party or Communist Youth League membership: many get RFEs and a few get a notice of intent to deny, usually focused on whether membership ended at least 5 years ago. Answer truthfully, and talk to a lawyer before filing if this applies to you.
Removing conditions (I-751): 7 months at best, nearly 3 years at worst
Fast cases are approved in 7 to 8 months, slow ones take close to 3 years. Many are combined with the N-400 interview and approved together.
Forum: Marriage & K-1 →Processing times are a guide: cases filed the same month can move very differently
USCIS service centers shift work between locations, so I-130s and I-140s filed around the same time may be approved in a few months or still be pending past the posted time. Once your case passes the posted time and its case inquiry date, you can submit an inquiry on the USCIS website.
